Golf is a precision club-and-ball sport in which competing players (or golfers) use many types of clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a golf course using the fewest number of strokes. Golf is one of the few ball games that does not require a standardized playing area; instead, the game is played on golf courses, each of which features a unique design, although courses usually consist of either 9 or 18 holes. Golf is played for the lowest number of strokes by an individual, known as stroke play, and for the lowest score on the number of holes won, known as match play.
Overview
The modern game of golf originated in 15th-century Scotland. The first written record of golf is a 1457 statute by King James II of Scotland, which banned the playing of “gowf” because it interfered with archery practice. Despite the ban, the game grew in popularity, and by the 18th century, golf was well-established in Scotland and had spread to England and beyond.
Equipment
Golfers use a variety of clubs, including drivers, irons, wedges, and putters. Each type of club is designed for specific types of shots and distances. The golf ball is typically made with a dimpled surface designed to improve aerodynamics and is made of layers of materials to optimize flight and control.
Rules and Play
The primary objective in golf is to play a set of holes in the least number of strokes. A round of golf typically consists of 18 holes. Each hole starts from a teeing ground and ends at a putting green with the actual hole. Golfers play the ball from the tee until it is holed, counting one stroke for each swing of the club that causes the ball to move. The player with the fewest strokes at the end of the round wins.
Types of Play
- Stroke Play: scoring the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds.
- Match Play: a scoring system where holes are won or lost through comparison with an opponent’s score on that hole, with the player winning the most holes declared the winner.
Golf Courses
Golf courses vary widely around the world. Typical 18-hole courses have a mixture of par-3, par-4, and par-5 holes. The terrain and natural features like sand bunkers, water hazards, and trees contribute to the challenge and character of a golf course.
