Insulin resistance occurs when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t easily take up glucose from your blood. As a result, your pancreas makes more insulin to help glucose enter your cells.
Causes of insulin resistance include:
- Obesity, particularly excess fat around the abdomen
- Physical inactivity
- Genetic factors and family history
- Certain health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- Poor diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugars
Insulin resistance is a key factor in the development of type 2 diabetes and is also linked to heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Managing insulin resistance typically involves lifestyle changes such as:
- Adopting a healthy, balanced diet rich in whole foods
- Increasing physical activity and exercise
- Losing excess weight
- Medications, if prescribed by a healthcare provider
Early detection and management are important to prevent complications associated with insulin resistance.
